Interim Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Beginning July 13, Candice will serve as Interim Commissioner of Indigenous Languages, leading the Commission while the Government of Canada completes the national selection process for the Commissioner and Directors for the next five-year term. Candice brings extensive leadership experience across the federal public service, including roles at Employment and Social Development Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada and, most recently, Indigenous Services Canada. Her work has focused on Indigenous labour market and skills development, Canada’s COVID-19 response, and policy, program and operational efforts related to the social determinants of health. Throughout this work, she has remained grounded in advancing practical, community-informed approaches that support Indigenous people, families and communities. Her commitment to children, families and lifelong learning began early in her career as an early learning and child care provider and later as a college instructor in child development. She also worked with a national child-focused non-governmental organization before joining the federal public service, experiences that continue to shape her collaborative and people-centred approach. Candice holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in Canadian Studies, with a focus on Indigenous children’s rights. As a woman of Anishinaabe (Algonquin) and European mixed descent, she is honoured to support Indigenous communities, families, language revitalization efforts and the relationships that sustain them.

About the Member's Office
|
With the passing of the Indigenous Languages Act in 2019 (the Act), the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages (the Commission) is established as an independent entity to, among other things, help promote Indigenous languages and support of efforts of Indigenous peoples to reclaim, revitalize, maintain, and strengthen Indigenous languages. Pursuant to the Act, on the recommendation of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, made after the Minister consults with a variety of Indigenous governments, Indigenous organizations, and other Indigenous governing bodies, the Governor in Council appoints a Commissioner of Indigenous Languages to hold office for a term not exceeding five years, subject to removal by the Governor in Council at any time for cause. The Commissioner and three Directors (representing the interests of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis) were appointed on June 13, 2021. The Commissioner and Directors took office on July 12, 2021. https://commissionforindigenouslanguages.ca/about/our-mandate |
